Hemp is the #1 source of biomass on the planet! Farming just six to eight percent of our contiguous land with it would satisfy our current demands for oil and gas. A process called pyrolysis uses high heat to turn biomass into charcoal or other fuels as well. Hemp grows with little fertilizers and no pesticides or herbicides to foul the soil and water, and grows in climates and conditions other crops wont grow. Hemp is also a great source for fibers and food. Canvas is derived from the word cannabis. For thousands of years all ships sails, rope, rigging, many clothes, and much more were of cannabis fibers which are the longest and strongest in nature. The Hemp seed is also the single most nutritionally complete food source on Earth!

Is attention being paid to biofuel feedstocks which can be grown in areas where vegetation levels are normally low? One of the concerns I am hearing is that even non-food crops, if grown where food is usually grown or on plantations hacked out of rainforests, will have compromised results with regard to GCC mitigation.

This is total nonsense. Biofuels don't make economic sense or they wouldn't need subsidies.
