USDA Support for Renewable Energy

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will be providing loan guarantees to help the ethanol industry, according to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.

Tom VilsackAt last week’s USDA Outlook Conference, Vilsack said the USDA “has a responsibility for keeping an eye on that industry” to maintain an infrastructure to produce the next generation of biofuels.

Vilsack also says USDA is working with the Department of Energy to support research efforts to identify new feedstocks for biofuels to take some of the pressure off the food versus fuel discussion. “My view is that we have the capacity and the ability to do both and need to do both. If we’re to meet the President’s instruction that he wants more energy production out of our farm fields and ranches, and if we are going to turn this economy around and become less reliant on fossil fuels, we’ve got to create more biofuel.”

In addition to biofuels, Vilsack stressed USDA support for all forms of renewable energy, including wind and solar, “to continue the momentum of building and sustaining an energy industry within USDA and within farming and ranching.”

There could be no better investment in America than to invest in America becoming energy independent! We need to utilize everything in out power to reduce our dependence on foreign oil including using our own natural resources.Create cheap clean energy, new badly needed green jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.The high cost of fuel this past year seriously damaged our economy and society. The cost of fuel effects every facet of consumer goods from production to shipping costs. After a brief reprieve gas is inching back up.OPEC will continue to cut production until they achieve their desired 80-100. per barrel. If all gasoline cars, trucks, and SUV’s instead had plug-in electric drive trainsthe amount of electricity needed to replace gasoline is about equal to the estimated wind energy potential of the state of North Dakota. There is a really good new book out by Jeff Wilson called The Manhattan Project of 2009 Energy Independence Now. http://www.themanhattanprojectof2009.com

Great info, thanks for putting that together! It is my opinion that the government needs to do even more to make this a priority not just for Americans but for the World as a whole. It is still a supply and demand issue for both Biofuel,Wind ,Solar etc., if there was a higher demand for these solutions then there would be more companies manufacturing these products and competition will drive down the costs to consumers. The impact would obviously be huge to the Word in many ways, lower greenhouse gases, changes in political balance, etc. I believe our country and the world is at a turning point that could have the greatest impact on the future of the World more than any generation before us if we do the right things by demanding this shift in energy policy and usage! We need more porgrams like this to stimulate investment in these types of new technology.
    Thanks again
