Ethanol Free Fuel in Oregon
Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski signed HB 3497 to amend Oregon’s ethanol mandate by allowing fueling facilities to sell premium, higher-octane gasoline without ethanol. House Republican Leader Bruce Hanna and Rep. Tim Freeman introduced introduced the bill.
“HB 3497 will give service stations the choice of selling unblended premium fuel,” Rep. Freeman said. “The bill addresses the concerns we’ve heard from many Oregonians who have experienced problems with the state’s ethanol mandate. HB 3497 doesn’t repeal the mandate, but better enables loggers, snowmobilers, fisherman and others to purchase the fuel they need to operate their equipment safely and effectively.”
Under previous law, retailers are required to sell gasoline that contains at least 10 percent ethanol. Though a 2008 law permitted the sale of unblended fuel for certain non-road uses, unblended fuel has been difficult to access because of distribution and storage issues.
“This bill will allow more retailers to sell unblended fuel to owners of the vehicles and tools who are exempted from the ethanol requirement,” Rep. Hanna said. “While improving access to unblended fuel, this new law will give the state’s renewable fuel standard an opportunity to work as it was originally intended.”
House Bill 3497 exempts premium gasoline, which has an octane rating of 91 or above, from the 10 percent ethanol blending requirement imposed under ORS 646.913. The new law will apply to gasoline sales that occur on or after January 1, 2010.

I am glad that we can now buy ethanol free gas for our cars, so we can get back to our old fuel economy. My vehicle went from 31 mpg on the freeway to 22 mpg. I just filled my tank with half a tank of premium ethanol free and raised my milage to 26. I am sure I will get back to the 30 to 31 mpg as soon as I can go 100 % free gas.
What I would appreciate, is a list all stations in Oregon that offer the premium gas, so we can know where to fuel up once we leave our immediate area.
The reason given for the ethanol 10 was to help our dependancy on oil. Well that has proved to be a bust as I get way better than 10% better economy with the ethanol free fuel and the use of the ethanol has raised all of my feed for my horses and sheep by more than 30%. We should go back to all gas with no ethanol and really help the economy.
Also it has cost many of us unnecesary repair bills on many of our older vehicles.
Thanks for allowing my rant,
Steve

We should go back to alcohol free fuel! The addition of 10% alcohol has not had the desirable result and there are detrimental effects. Production of alcohol consumes about as much energy as the alcohol yields. Since much of the energy consumed is petroleum based the net result does not decrease our dependence on foreign oil.
