DF Cast: Green Limo Offers Rides in Style on Biodiesel
It’s New Year’s Eve, and many people will be stepping out on the town, riding in style in a limousine. But some folks will be able go green while they go swanky, thanks to Seattle’s first eco-friendly limo service, Seattle GreenLimo.
During this edition of the Domestic Fuel Cast, we talk to company president Kevin Williams, who has four limos running on the green fuel, cutting CO2 emissions by 80 percent or more. Williams credits at least two ladies, Sharon, who made her own biodiesel for her Jetta, and Zoe, who is the kind of person who volunteered to rescue dogs after Hurricane Katrina, for inspiring him to continue in the green venture, despite some roadblocks put up by the State of Washington … which tries to sell itself as being an eco-friendly state.
It’s a pretty cool conversation, and you can hear more of it here: DFCast-12-31-09.mp3

Seattle, which resides in King County, and Berkeley all dropped biodiesel made from food stock:

The smell they talk about was the soot pouring out of that woman’s Jetta, which even on biodiesel, is much worse than a gasoline Jetta. You know it isn’t good when you can actually see as well as smell your car’s exhaust.
Doctor Dan and Propel sell a product made from food stock, and although he said it is made from farmers right here in this area, the feedstock for the biofuel for the most part actually came from far away.

Limos are ostentatious and overboard — no matter what fuel they use.

Russ is right. Petroleum-based, carcinogenic, smog-causing gasoline is so much better than biodegradable biodiesel based on recycled or new vegetable oil. This is why I make sure my children get 5 servings of fruits and gas a day.
Sheesh!
You can DRINK biodiesel. (you don’t want to, but you can)
Go ahead and look at figure two from the highly controversial EPA study. See the huge percentage of the bar for biodiesel that comes from international stock. Yes, if you cut down jungles and plant soy there is a negative effect. Of course. But if you get your fuel from local sources (right now the bulk of the fuel is NW grown camelina and recycled veggie oil) then you’re not cutting down any jungles, are you?
The study’s figures were based on something called ILUC or Indirect Land Use Change. Take the land use out of the equation by using foodstock from sources you know and it’s a moot argument.
Take a longer look at the study and see the impact of “waste grease biodiesel”.
And the article Russ quotes cites the city’s decision to stop using biodiesel as a financial concern. Would you rather your kids ride a school bus running on fossil fuel or veggies?
There are blood diamonds out there but I’m not about to tell my girlfriend we can never get engaged.
Think responsibly. Do the research. Buy from sources you can trust.
Go Green,
Kevin
