Merle Haggard on Biodiesel

Merle HaggardOne of the newest stars to advocate biodiesel is Merle Haggard. The legendary country star performed for attendees at this year’s Conference after meeting with the press and the board of the National Biodiesel Board.

Before coming to the auditorium where he performed though his bus got a fill up with biodiesel. During the press conference Merle said that he was learning about the benefits of biodiesel. When asked what attracted him to the renewable fuel source his answer was “the smell.”

Merle HaggardAs someone who is in a diesel powered bus a lot he says he really doesn’t like the smell of burning diesel but heard that biodiesel smelled different and that was what got him interested. He also said that he’s happy for how the development of biodiesel is helping American farmers. (Thanks to Brian Kanof for the picture of Merle filling up)

I recorded the full press conference which you can listen to here: Listen To MP3 Merle Haggard Press Conference (14 min MP3)

Darryl Brinkmann Interview

Darryl Brinkmann, Larry Hagman, Daryl HannahI think that I’ve mentioned that many of my interviews and some other audio files like general session presentations are available as a podcast. It’s the National Biodiesel Conference Podcast in fact. You can find the link and instructions on how to subscribe here.

One of the interviews in the podcast series is one I did today with the chairman of the National Biodiesel Board, Darryl Brinkmann, seen here on the left during a rehearsal session yesterday with Larry Hagman and Daryl Hannah.

I spoke with Darryl today about how this conference is growing and what he sees as challenges facing the biodiesel business even in light of all the growth that’s taking place. Darryl says that there are two things to consider, one is quality and the other is public policy.

Daryl Hannah Promotes Biodiesel

Jenna and DarylI started out wandering around and getting my bearings here at the Biodiesel Conference and just like last year, one of the first persons I ran into was Daryl Hannah. Daryl has been to every National Biodiesel Conference and can’t believe how much it has grown. She’s pictured here with Jenna Higgins, Communications Director for the National Biodiesel Board during rehearsals for tomorrow’s opening general session.

I spoke with Daryl about the conference and what she thinks about the work the National Biodiesel Board is doing. Daryl says that we need to make sure that what we’re using as a renewable fuel is sustainable and that we need to get off our dependence on fossil fuels.

Arriving at Biodiesel Conference

Hello from San Antonio, location of this year's National Biodiesel Conference. I just got in and am using the Internet Cafe here in the convention center. It's sponsored by BioEnergy of America, Inc., giving everyone a convenient place to check email or as in my case, post onto their blog.

Right now a lot of people are getting checked in or attending one of the opening sessions like the one on membership in the National Biodiesel Board. Later we'll all go off site to a Super Bowl party and I'm looking forward to that.

I'm going to be collecting pictures and hopefully some interviews this afternoon before the party and will try to get some of them posted later this evening. I'll be cross posting onto the Biodiesel Conference Blog so be sure to check out both sites for all the latest from this annual event.

NBB Conference to Feature One Bad Motor Scooter

Think biodiesel is just for slow-moving tractors? Check out this picture of a motorcycle Greenline Industries will be showcasing at the National Biodiesel Conference & Expo in San Antonio, TX later this week.Die Moto
Built by Oakland, California-based The Crucible, a non-profit educational collaboration of arts, industry and community, this thing will attempt to break the land-speed record for a diesel-powered motorcycle at the famed Bonneville Salt Flats this coming fall. The record is 105 mph. This thing has already been clocked at 130 mph! This is from a Greenline press release:

“We believe in proving the simple point that diesel fuels are exceptionally efficient in smaller engines, and that biodiesel is the
ultimate form of diesel,” said Ted Lavoie, Greenline’s CEO. “That is why we have sponsored the Earthrace circumnavigation world record attempt, and that is why we are sponsoring The Crucible’s land speed record attempt.”

“We hope to show the world the performance potential of bio-fuels by breaking the existing diesel record and establish records for both biodiesel and SVO at the home of high performance, the Bonneville Salt Flats,” said Michael Sturtz, Die Moto’s rider and The Crucible’s Executive Director.

See it for yourself at the National Biodiesel Conference & Expo February 4th-7th in San Antonio, TX.

Biodiesel Conference Overview

Once again this year I’ll be the biodiesel blogger at the National Biodiesel Conference which kicks off this weekend in San Antonio. I’ll be posting pictures, interviews and video clips during the conference. To get us started I interviewed National Biodiesel Board CEO, Joe Jobe. Joe gives us an overview of what we can expect.

You can listen to my interview with Joe here: Listen To MP3 Joe Jobe Conference Overview Interview (7 min MP3)

Remember that all my interviews will be podcast so you can subscribe to them in your favorite podcatching software (I recommend iTunes). You can find out more about how to subscribe here. This will be episode 22 since all the original 21 interviews from last year are still available to you.

We also have a conference blog sponsor this year and want to welcome and thank John Deere. This means you’ll be seeing the following tagline in all my posts:

See You in San Antonio

It’s time to register for the 2007 National Biodiesel Conference, scheduled for February 4-7 in sunny San Antonio.

Attendance at the annual conference has doubled every year since it started in 2004 and this year it could top 2,000 – so early registration is highly recommended. Better get hotel reservations early too as rooms in the hotel blocks are moving fast, with some possibly sold out.

According to the National Biodiesel Board, the conference will feature “an impressive slate of world-renowned figures like James Carville and Mary Matalin, and Merle Haggard, who will tie biodiesel into the national and cultural landscape of our times. The event’s offerings don’t stop there: more sessions and a much larger exhibitor list at the expo will make this an educational and networking event not to be missed.”

If you can’t make it, not to worry. Domestic Fuel will be providing regular updates from the event and we will once again be hosting the Biodiesel Conference Blog live, on-site with pictures, audio, video and more.
